An exciting and diversified year lies behind us. We at Image Access were not only creative and innovative – clearly seen in the development of the WideTEK 36 duplex scanner and Scan2ICC – we have also optimized our products with new features, many of which come directly from our customers’ suggestions. Further developments are already in progress – you can certainly look forward to the next year and advanced innovations from Image Access. As usual, in our Christmas edition of Scan2Net Info, we fill you in on our latest news – this time, very briefly.
- Image Access Movie – anyone who has ever wanted to look behind the scenes at Image Access now has a good chance to do so. We proudly present our new company video.
- www.imageaccess.de in a new design. Check out our website and see for yourself: our website not only has a new design, but also a new structure and additional features.
- Image Access acquired the worldwide sales rights for the Bookeye® planetary scanners from ImageWare.
- We report on trade shows of our sales partners; today: the GEA in Krakow, Poland.
- Our regular column „How much do you know about the Image Access Service Portal?“ covers the new FTP server for all authorized customers.
- Next year we will also offer technical or sales trainings for our sales partners. Please register for one of the next training dates in 2010.
- With this newsletter edition, we start a new feature: the Glossary. Here, we will define and discuss the most important terminology from the imaging industry. At the request of some of our customers, we start with the term ICC profiling.

Now everyone can experience scanner manufacturing firsthand without having to travel to Germany, by watching our new company video.
We show you how our scanners are produced, from the development of CAD models, through the production of various scanner components on our production lines, up to final assembly and quality control. New ideas and technological advancements are a top priority in our company. This has led to constant technological growth in our family of scanners and the Scan2Net platform.

In the past weeks, we have taken a closer look at our website and revamped its contents. The result: an informative and up-to-date homepage, elegant design and clearly arranged navigation – there is so much new on www.imageaccess.de.
We followed our customers’ wishes and created an information platform that is easy to use. The homepage provides all current information at a glance. We have also optimized the navigation bar during our „modernization work“: now you can find the important sections and content even faster and more comfortably.

For the past 13 years, Image Access has developed and produced the well-known Bookeye® planetary scanners. The Bookeye® 2 – a leading product in the Bookeye® scanner family since 2002, has already sold many thousand units.
In the past, our partner Image Ware GmbH had the exclusive distribution rights for all Bookeye® scanners. On January 1, 2010 Image Access acquires the worldwide sales rights for the Bookeye® product family from ImageWare. By bringing development and manufacturing together with sales and marketing under one umbrella, Image Access is able to profit from numerous synergies.
With the buyback of the sales channel, Image Access establishes themselves as a unique vendor, offering products in all of the large format scanner segments. The product portfolio now consists of the WideTEK flatbed scanners, the WideTEK sheetfeed scanners including duplex scanners as well as the Bookeye® planetary scanners. Due to the cost savings at all levels, Bookeye® customers will benefit from the restructuring of the sales channels.

Our Polish distributor, the company DDP Digital Document Professionals, demonstrated the wide format scanners WideTEK 25 and WideTEK 36 at the GEA from October 8-10, 2009. GEA is the international trade show for geodesy, geoinformation and land management in Krakow, Poland.
If you have also presented our scanners at a trade show or conference in your country, please send some photos with a short description of the fair to Scan2NetInfo@imageaccess.de.

New service for our sales partners in the Customer Service Portal
We have expanded our Customer Service Portal with a new service: the direct access to our FTP server in the section Actions.
For each of our sales partners, we have created an area on the server which is password protected for limited access. That means, your personal login and password are required to enter this area and only you and your designated employees (as well as Image Access staff) have access to the content. Please contact us if you require additional login credentials for your employees. For guests, we have created special guest accounts which can be used in special cases, after consultation with our Customer Support.
How can you use the FTP server and what can you upload or download? Image Access as well as our sales partners can upload various files on the server: test scans, screen shots, videos, software adaptations for special customer requirements, beta software versions for testing purposes, marketing material or documentation as raw data (i.e., Corel Draw files). The maximum file size may not exceed 100 MB.

In the Glossary, our regular newsletter feature, we will introduce to you a definition of a technical term from the scanning technology area. Today´s topic is the ICC profiling. You will find further definitions on our website in the section Support/Glossary.
The reproduction of a document is a complex process; and at least three input and output devices are involved in this process: scanner, screen and printer. Each device handles colors of the image in a different way. There are many reasons for that: the devices support different color spaces (for example, CMYK or RGB) or they use different (wider or narrower) ranges of colors. When scanning documents further problems occur: Ambient light characteristics or temperature fluctuation of the device can lead to deviations in the color fidelity. This is especially relevant for open scanning systems like planetary scanners or flatbed scanners with open lid, because the documents are confronted with continuous change of light. The goal of the color management is that the scanned and printed document features at the end the same color quality as the original document.
To reduce all input and output devices to a common color denominator, the so-called ICC device profiles are calculated. Such profiles describe the color spaces and how devices should reproduce them. In order to profile the devices the special profiling software is required.
For this purpose, Image Access has developed an online tool Scan2ICC. The operator scans a special IT 8 Target. The scanner captures a set of reference colors. The data are sent directly from the scanner to the Image Access server and the server calculates an individual ICC profile for the scanner. This profile will be saved for all subsequent scans until, if required, the new ICC profile is calculated.
Within the post-processing procedure, the scanner’s ICC profile can be processed by any image enhancement application. This color management also allows the adjustment of different color spaces of the scanner (RGB) and the printer (CMYK). The result is the reproduction of the document with colors optimized to match the original document.

Seit rund 13 Jahren entwickelt und produziert Image Access die berühmten Bookeye® Aufsichtsscanner. Allein der Bookeye® 2 – das bisherige Aushängeschild in der Bookeye® Scannerfamilie ist seit 2002 in Produktion und wurde seitdem mehrere Tausende Mal verkauft. Bisher hatte unser Partner ImageWare die Exklusiv-Vertriebsrechte für alle Bookeye® Scanner. Diese seit vielen Jahren bestehende Trennung zwischen Entwicklung und Fertigung durch Image Access und Marketing und Vertrieb durch ImageWare wird nun aufgehoben. Ab 1. Januar 2010 wird Image Access den Vertrieb der Bookeye® Produktfamilie von der ImageWare übernehmen.
Mit diesem Rückerwerb der Vertriebsrechte etabliert sich Image Access nun als weltweit einziger Anbieter in allen Großformatscanner-Segmenten. Das Produktportfolio besteht aus den WideTEK Flachbettscannern, den WideTEK Einzugsscannern inklusive Duplexscanner sowie jetzt auch den Bookeye® Aufsichtsscannern. Durch die Kostenersparnisse auf allen Ebenen profitieren sowohl Image Access als auch alle Bookeye® Kunden.

Neues Serviceangebot für unsere Vertriebspartner im Customer Service Portal
Wir haben unser Customer Service Portal um ein neues Serviceangebot erweitert: den direkten Zugriff auf unseren FTP-Server über das Menü Aktionen.
Für jeden unserer Vertriebspartner gibt es einen geschützten Bereich auf dem Server, zu dem nur dieser und seine Mitarbeiter mit der entsprechenden Berechtigung Zugang haben. Das bedeutet, dass Sie Ihr persönliches Login und Passwort benötigen, um diesen Bereich nutzen zu können. Bitte sprechen Sie uns an, wenn wir den Zugang für weitere Ihrer Mitarbeiter freischalten sollen. Für Gäste sind Gastzugänge eingerichtet, die in Absprache mit unseren Support-Mitarbeitern in Spezialfällen benutzt werden können.
Was können Sie über den FTP-Server hoch- bzw. herunterladen? Sowohl Image Access als auch unsere Vertriebspartner können verschiedene Dateien auf dem Server hochladen: Testscans, Screenshots, Videos, Softwareanpassungen für spezielle Kundenanwendungen, Beta-Softwareversionen zu Testzwecken, Marketing-Material oder Dokumentation als Rohdateien (z. B. Corel Draw Dateien). Jede Datei darf die maximale Größe von 100 MB nicht überschreiten.

In dieser neuen Rubrik werden wir Ihnen in jeder Ausgabe eine Definition eines Fachbegriffs aus dem Bereich der Scantechnologie zur Verfügung stellen. Heute geht es um ICC-Profilierung. Weitere Definitionen finden Sie auf unserer Homepage in der Rubrik Support/Glossar.
Jede Bildreproduktion durchläuft mehrere Prozesse, dabei sind insgesamt drei Ein- und Ausgabegeräte beteiligt: Scanner, Monitor und Drucker. Jedes dieser Geräte stellt die Farben eines Bildes unterschiedlich dar. Dies hat verschiedene Gründe: zum Einen unterstützen die Geräte unterschiedliche Farbräume (CMYK oder RGB), zum Anderen besitzen sie verschiedene (standardisierte oder erweiterte) Farbskalen zur Bilddarstellung. Beim Scannen treten noch weitere Probleme auf: Wechselnde Außenlichtverhältnisse oder Temperaturschwankungen am Gerät können zu Abweichungen in der Farbtreue führen. Dies ist insbesondere für offene Scansysteme wie Aufsichtsscanner oder Flachbettscanner mit geöffnetem Deckel relevant, weil die Scanvorlagen dort ständigem Lichtwechsel ausgesetzt sind. Das Ziel des Farbmanagements ist es jedoch, dass das eingescannte und ausgedruckte Bild am Ende die gleiche Farbqualität aufweist wie die Originalvorlage.
Um alle Eingabe- und Ausgabegeräte auf einen Farbnenner zu bringen, werden sogenannte ICC-Geräteprofile kalkuliert. Diese beschreiben die Farbräume und wie diese vom Gerät dargestellt werden sollen. Um die Geräte zu profilieren, benötigt der Anwender eine spezielle Profilierungssoftware.Image Access hat zu diesem Zweck für ihre Scanner das Online-Tool Scan2ICC entwickelt. Dazu wird ein spezielles IT8 Scanner Calibration Target eingescannt. Der Scanner erfasst dabei eine Reihe von Referenzfarben. Die Daten werden direkt vom Scanner zum Image Access Server geschickt und dort wird online ein individuelles ICC-Profil berechnet. Dieses Profil kann solange für nachfolgende Scans verwendet werden, bis (bei Bedarf) ein neues Profil kalkuliert wird.
Das Scanner-ICC-Profil kann im Rahmen des Post-Processing von einem Bildbearbeitungsprogramm (z. B. Adobe Photoshop) übernommen und verarbeitet werden. Dieses Farbmanagement ermöglicht auch die Anpassung verschiedener Farbräume von Scanner (RGB) und Drucker (CMYK). Das Ergebnis ist eine Reproduktion der Vorlage, die in ihren Farben dem Original bestmöglich entspricht.
